 These past few weeks, our class explored major issues affecting people today healthcare, the environment and safety, immigration, education and  economy. Even though each topic is different, hearing real stories from the people they interviewed made me realize how connected they all are. Instead of just reading information from articles, we got to listen to actual experiences, and that made everything feel more real and meaningful.

One of the topics that stood out to me the most was healthcare. Learning how expensive and complicated the system can be, especially for people without insurance, opened my eyes. Hearing about people avoiding the doctor because they can’t afford it honestly shocked me. It made me see how healthcare affects way more than just someone’s physical health. When a person can’t get proper medical help, it affects their school, work, routine, and overall opportunities. Healthcare ended up feeling like the base of everything, because without it, so many other areas of life become harder.

The environment and safety topic also had a big impact on me. We learned how different communities experience their living conditions in completely different ways. Some people live around clean parks and safe streets, while others deal with pollution, unsafe areas, and poor waste management every single day. It’s usually lower-income neighborhoods that face the worst of it. That made me realize that environmental issues aren’t just about nature—they’re about fairness. Clean air, safe spaces, and healthy surroundings shouldn’t depend on someone’s income or where they live.

Immigration was another topic that hit me on a personal level. Listening to the experience of someone who came to the U.S. for a better life made me think a lot. They talked about the struggle of learning English, finding work, starting from zero, and still taking care of their family. It made immigration feel so human and emotional. Instead of seeing it as something political or distant, I saw the courage and sacrifice behind it. Their story reminded me how strong people can be when they’re trying to build a better future for themselves and the people they love.

Education and the economy ended up being more connected than I expected. We learned how access to education can shape someone’s entire life—what jobs they can get, how much they can earn, and how stable their future can be. But not everyone gets the same opportunities. Schools with low funding, overcrowded classrooms, and limited resources create huge disadvantages for some students. On top of that, the economy plays a huge role in what people can and can’t access. High tuition, student debt, inflation, and financial instability all affect someone’s ability to study, work, and move forward. Seeing how education and the economy interact made me understand how both can either open doors or create barriers, depending on someone’s situation.

Overall, this project helped me see these issues not just as topics, but as real experiences people are actually living through. Hearing people’s stories made everything feel more personal and reminded me that learning doesn’t just come from reading; it comes from listening, understanding, and paying attention to what others go through. This whole experience helped me become more aware, empathetic, and open-minded. It showed me how interconnected these issues are and how crucial it is to consider the broader context when thinking about the challenges people face in their daily lives.
